Health Benefit Coverage for Nutritional Counseling

To ensure you’re informed, I’ve clarified the key points about work benefit coverage and how it may support your wellness journey.

I am a private practice Certified Holistic Nutritionist (CHN) and a Natural Nutrition - Clinical Practitioner (NNCP), registered with the Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners (CANNP). My services are not covered by OHIP. However, many clients find that extended health benefits or health spending accounts (HSA) help make these services more accessible.

Many providers recognize the services of NNCPs registered with the CANNP including:

  • Manulife
  • iA Financial Group
  • GreenShield Canada
  • Equitable Life Insurance
  • ClaimSecure Inc.
  • Blue Cross Alberta

Sunlife now offers some employers a Personal Spending Account within which Nutrition Counselling is covered.  Please confirm with your specific insurance plan for details.

You will receive an invoice after each session. This invoice can be submitted to your insurer for reimbursement if your plan covers nutritional counselling services.

Currently, I do not provide direct billing services.  It’s worth noting that while some providers offer direct billing, their initial session fees tend to be higher. My approach keeps fees transparent and manageable, allowing you to claim expenses yourself if eligible.

Many health benefit plans include annual coverage for Registered Nutritionists/NNCP who are member of the Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners (CANNP).

If you have a health spending account (HSA), it’s worth exploring whether it reimburses nutrition services, as these accounts often cover a broad range of health-related expenses.

Questions to ask your insurance provider:

To help you confirm coverage, I recommend asking your provider the following:

1. Do I have annual coverage for a Registered Nutritionist?

2. What is the annual dollar limit for this coverage?

3. When does my plan reset or roll over?

4. Do you cover 100% of my sessions, or is there partial reimbursement?

5. What is the limit for the initial session?

6) What is the limit for follow-up sessions?
